How to Trim Your Eyebrows for Men

You care about skincare and grooming. You want to look your best. And lately you’ve been wondering… do I need to trim my eyebrows?

And, more generally, how would I go about trimming my eyebrows in the first place?

There’s not a simple answer because, like most things in grooming (and life), it depends.

Instead of a direct yes or no answer, this article will help you decide if you should trim your eyebrows, explain how to go about doing it, and answer some common questions and concerns most guys have when it comes to eyebrow trimming and grooming.

Why Some Guys Trim Their Eyebrows

Your eyebrows are a prominent and significant part of your face. You use them to make all kinds of expressions while interacting with others. So yes, it matters how they look.

Some of the main reasons men want to trim or groom their eyebrows are:

  • To remove/reduce a unibrow
  • To thin out thick eyebrows
  • To give them a more aesthetically pleasing shape
  • To trim stray long hairs

And since most guys fall into one of these categories, it’s likely you have a good reason to want to trim or groom your eyebrows too.

How Do You Want Your Eyebrows to Look?

Grooming is an exercise in self expression. The way you present yourself to the world has major implications and means a lot. So, before you start trimming your eyebrows just because the internet told you to, think about what kind of look you want to achieve.

In general, how would you describe your personal style?

  • Refined - keeping your eyebrows trimmed and well shaped will fit perfectly with your overall look
  • Rugged - maybe all you need to do is a little unibrow maintenance while the rest can be left to grow as it pleases
  • Simple - just trim the few unwieldy or long eyebrow hairs and leave the rest alone
  • Unique - do (or don’t do) what feels right for you

How to Remove Your Unibrow

Some guys are all about the unibrow, and there’s certainly nothing wrong with rocking yours. But if you choose to get rid of it, here’s the best method for removing your unibrow:

  • Use tweezers. Please invest in a separate set of tweezers that you only use for plucking hairs and that you wash before and after each use. Tweezers can be used for all kinds of things and you don’t want to transfer bacteria.
  • Pluck one hair at a time. Even if you have an extensive unibrow, you’ll get the best results and experience the least discomfort when removing one hair at at time.
  • Grip the hair at the root. Pull your skin taut and grab at each hair as close to the root as possible.
  • Pluck in the direction of hair growth. When removing eyebrow hairs, always pull in the direction of hair growth. That makes them easier to remove and reduces redness, irritation, and discomfort.
  • Less is more. As you remove unibrow hairs, take a moment to review what you’ve done. Be careful not to get overambitious - you still want to leave your naturally shaped eyebrows without overdoing it.
  • Use aftershave when you’re done. Much like shaving, plucking eyebrow hairs can be irritating to your skin. So apply some soothing aftershave - like our Instant Relief Aftershave - when you’ve finished to calm the skin, reduce redness, and moisturize.

How to Trim Eyebrows

There are lots of different theories on how to shape your eyebrows for the right effect. But for most guys, it’s best not to shape your eyebrows at home. Instead, stick to simple trimming of long hairs.

To do this, use the fine end of a comb and brush up on your eyebrows. Use scissors to trim any hairs that stick out as long, wiry, or out of shape.

Easy does it - you may only have one or two hairs to trim on each brow. Or none at all. Trimming is about keeping your eyebrows clean and uniform, not changing their shape.

What About Having a Professional Trim Your Eyebrows?

If you want to alter the shape of your eyebrows, your best bet is going to a professional. Ask your barber if they can help you create the style you want. If they’re not experienced, find a barbershop or salon that specifically offers eyebrow shaping.

Why not do this at home? Well, much like cutting your hair, eyebrow trimming and shaping is a skill, even an art. And since your eyebrows are rather small to begin with, little mistakes can create a big negative effect in how you look. So unless you’re experienced or don’t care about your appearance, experimenting on your own isn’t a good idea.
