Eye Puffiness - What Causes It and How to Prevent It
Do you love the way you look first thing in the morning? If you’re like most guys, probably not. That’s why you spend a few minutes on your morning skincare and grooming routine. You don’t want to leave the house looking like you just rolled out of bed. Because it’s not your best look.
Some of the tell-tale signs you just got out of bed - or had a rough night - are eye puffiness and dark circles. They’re also associated with the aging process. And as it turns out, one of the top reasons men turn to anti-aging products is to control eye puffiness.
But what causes eye puffiness, dark circles, and other common signs of aging around the eyes? What can you do to minimize and prevent these issues? And what are the best ingredients to look for in anti-aging products for men if you struggle with eye puffiness?
What Causes Puffy Eyes?
There are several common causes of puffy eyes in men - some preventable, some not so much. In most cases, eye puffiness is caused by fluid retention beneath the thin skin around the eyes. It could also be due to the movement of fat tissue from inside the eye socket to just beneath the eye.
You may have puffiness and under eye bags due to one or more of these causes:
Inherited Facial Features - It may be that you just don’t have great genetic luck when it comes to eye puffiness. That doesn’t mean you can’t do anything about it. But you will have to be a bit more proactive in your prevention approach.
Aging - This is the one that gets most guys. No matter what, the aging process is going to have some effect on the appearance of your eyes. As your skin loses collagen and becomes less elastic, it takes on a saggy texture that makes eye bags more common.
Stress - When you get stressed out, your body releases cortisol, also known as the stress hormone. Since cortisone affects the salt balance in your body, it can cause fluid retention that shows up as eye puffiness.
Too Much Salt - Again, salt imbalance can cause fluid retention and result in eye puffiness. You may notice that your eyes get puffy after a particularly salt meal.
Dehydration - Under eye bags can appear or become more significant when you are dehydrated. If you drink a lot of caffeine or alcohol, dehydration is more likely.
Allergies - Several common allergies cause swelling and irritation around the eyes that can appear as dark circles or puffy eye bags.
Not Enough Sleep - Burning the candle at both ends will leave you burnt out - and with dark circles and puffy bags under your eyes.
How to Prevent Puffy Eyes
There are three key ways to prevent and minimize puffy eye bags. When used together, they are sure to help improve your skin and appearance. You may still have some puffiness from time to time, but not like you would without these preventative measures:
1 - Get Plenty of Rest
It’s not easy to schedule a full 6-8 hours of sleep each night. But by making it a priority, you can get more rest and wake up with significantly less eye puffiness. There’s no way around this one - if you want to look your best, you have to get more sleep on a daily basis.
2 - Stay Hydrated
Drink plenty of water everyday to keep your body hydrated and prevent the fluid accumulation that causes eye puffiness. Too much sugar, caffeine, and alcohol all work against this - so keep them to a minimum. It’s especially important to avoid caffeine and alcohol close to bed time if you want to wake up looking refreshed.
3 - Promote Good Circulation
There are a few ways you can do this, starting with using the best eye cream for men. Choose a product with soothing ingredients that reduce inflammation and smooth away puffiness and dark circles. Caffeine (in your eye cream, not in your coffee) can help - research shows that it “has potent antioxidant properties. It helps protect cells against the UV radiation and slows down the process of photo aging of the skin. Moreover, caffeine contained in cosmetics increases the microcirculation of the blood in the skin…”
Cooling the skin around your eyes can also aid with circulation and thus reduce swelling. Try covering your eyes with cold spoons, chilled steeped tea bags, or cool cucumber slices for about 15 minutes to clear up some puffiness.
